Nature Immersion at Taft Gardens

The importance of our relationship to land, plants, and place is rooted in ancestral Indigenous Knowledge all over the world. Experience a slow, relaxing integrative mindfulness practice that honors this ancestral wisdom. You will be given directions, in the form of an invitation, to assist you in observing with all of your senses. It is a kind of “nervous system reset” that has the potential to remind us of the Interconnection of All Things and our relationship to the Earth.  It’s not so much about knowing the names of all of the plants, as it is about noticing which plants you feel pulled to. It is more about being “here”, in the present moment, than it is about being “there”. Experience the holistic health benefits of Forest Bathing or Shinrin Yoku such as enhanced immunity, lowered blood pressure, lowered cortisol concentrations, increased focus, enhanced creativity, and more. Activate the parasympathetic nervous system to assist your body in engaging its own restorative processes. You are the medicine. Tú eres la medicina. The event ends with a ceremonial sharing of tea and some healthy snacks.

Indigenous Herbalism Traditions with Elena Rios

In this class we will begin with a traditional Copaltemaliztl—the ceremonial burning of copal—to ground, connect, and honor the elements of life: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. Together in community, we will explore what it means to cultivate deep, reciprocal relationships with our plant relatives for healing, balance, and personal growth. This class will include a plática (heart-centered discussion) and hands-on guidance for a basic self-cleansing or “limpia” ceremony using plants. You’ll learn how to integrate this ancestral practice into your own self-care rituals in a respectful and accessible way. We will reflect on how herbalism helps us re-remember our ancestral knowledge and reconnect to our inner wisdom. Tú eres la medicina. You are the medicine.
